Mobile Phone Photography Basics

There is so much to learn about phone photography that it’s hard not to have a much longer list. Using the tips below is a great way to get started and create amazing pictures.

1. Use Gridlines to Balance your Shot

One of the best tools your phone offers you is the gridlines on your camera. Balancing your shot by using the lines will help you decrease editing time (because who has all the time to edit?) and ensure you are getting a solid image.

Typically, the gridlines show nine boxes. Putting your image subject in the middle of the frame draws in the most attention because eyes are naturally drawn to it.

2. Be Bold with Negative Space

Using negative space tells your audience what they should be focusing on. The subject of your image will stand out, also making it look clean and professional.

If you capture that Amazing photo, you can easily make posters to display your work for everyone to see!

3. Change Your Point of View and Use Candids

Have you ever seen images that were taken from crazy angles and looking down from a building that seems hundreds of floors high? Mobile phone photography gives you the chance to take a simple picture and make it complex by changing the point of view.

Candid pictures also work great; they attract interest and tell a story at the same time. Be sure that you take plenty of shots so that you can select the one that brings the most emotion and context.

4. Balance Is Key

Creating the perfect balance involves using those gridlines that were mentioned above. Typically a balanced picture is one that is appealing to the viewer’s eye and can be divided into two different parts.

When you take a balanced photo, it should look like a reflection if folded over. Taking a simple image subject and balancing it in negative space draws your audience to the center and maintains their attention.

5. Hold off on the Zoom Function

Sometimes it is hard to get a good picture without zooming into the subject. The problem with zooming in is that the picture begins to lose focus. Your picture will gradually become more grainy, pixelated, and blurry.

What exactly is pixelation? A pixel is the smallest part of an image that can be individually processed in a video display system. So once you zoom too far, each pixel shows making the image blurry and grainy.

If possible, try to get closer to the photo subject rather than zooming. If there is a lot of extra space on the sides of your picture, you can always crop them out later anyway.

Practice Makes Perfect

Many people rely on apps to create the perfect image. Following these guidelines will help create the type of picture you are proud of. They will probably also make your work look a lot more professional.

Mobile phone photography gives you the chance to capture amazing shots. It IS possible for you to turn something normal to absolutely eye-catching!
