Pantone® 186 Uncoated: Pantone 186 op uncoated karton
Transparant: dekt geen donker papier. Drukkers schrijven het PMS 186 U; huisstijlrichtlijnen schrijven het meestal Pantone® 186 Uncoated. Dezelfde inkt, dezelfde plaat: de letter is het papier waarop hij landt. Op coated papier in dezelfde kleur is PMS 186 C, en het ziet er niet hetzelfde uit.

Gecoat of ongecoat, eerlijk bekeken
The same ink is not the same colour on the two stocks. On coated sheets the ink sits on a sealed surface: denser, brighter, sharper edges. On uncoated the fibres absorb it: softer, duller, slightly lighter, and warm colours lose the most punch. Some colours change character outright: brights go chalky, deep navies go grey-blue.

Gedrag in productie
- The default 'proper red'. On uncoated it warms and dusts down about a step: closer to a brick than a pillar box.
- Volle dekking in 186 op gestructureerd ongestreken papier is echt een lastige persklus. Reken op wat wolkigheid. Dat komt door het vel en is geen defect.
Op donker papier
Offset and letterpress inks are translucent. On a dark or coloured stock a light ink will not cover: it sinks into the sheet and reads tone-on-tone. For light colour on dark paper the answer is foil stamping or an opaque screen pass, never a straight PMS hit.

Een CMYK-opbouw van een steunkleur is een benadering, niet de kleur zelf. Het maakt het meeste uit bij grote egale vlakken, bij merkkritische elementen en bij felle kleuren en diepe blauwtinten die proceskleur simpelweg niet haalt. Het maakt het minste uit bij kleine tekst en in foto's.

- What does Pantone 186 look like on uncoated paper?
- Zachter, doffer en iets lichter dan het gecoate staal. Ongecoate vezels nemen de inkt op in plaats van die op een gesloten oppervlak te laten liggen, waardoor de verzadiging overal afneemt. Het ongecoate staal hier is afgeleid van de gecoate benadering: bestel de stalenset, of vraag ons de inkten na je bestelling af te stemmen.
- Can you print Pantone 186 on dark or coloured stock?
- Not as a standard ink hit. Pantone 186 is translucent, so on dark stock the paper colour comes through and the result is tone-on-tone. For this colour on dark paper we foil stamp or run an opaque screen instead.
- Can Pantone 186 be matched in CMYK?
- Een procesopbouw komt dicht in de buurt op gecoat papier, maar is op ongecoat papier steeds te weinig verzadigd.
