Lone Oat: a carton that talks, in wood type

A spec brand for a Texas oat drink. Takes the talkative posture and raw-board honesty of the category leader, then builds the entire visual language from Texas rodeo and county-fair broadside wood type. Two inks, no flood, no varnish.

Boxes for Print Peppermint design exercise with 1 qt aseptic brick, slanted top, screw cap, unbleached natural kraft-face carton board, black plus one spot colour per sku, rubber-stamp local proof, no printed badge and no varnish, no laminate, no white underprint.

    The idea

Nobody commissioned this. It is the second in a pair of spec brands built to argue the same point with challenger food clients: shelf presence comes from restraint and specificity, not process colour and gloss.

    Four rules

    1. 01Borrow the posture, not the drawing. Kept the posture, a carton that talks to you, and rebuilt everything else from Texas rodeo and county-fair broadsides: mismatched wood-type…
    2. 02The board is the flood. Unbleached natural kraft-face board, so the speckle is the fibre rather than a printed texture. Two inks per SKU, black plus one spot, and…
    3. 03A stamp, not a badge. A rubber-stamp impression at a slight angle: GROWN 38 MI FROM HERE · HILL CO. TX, with the ink thin and uneven where the stamp lifted early…
    4. 04Let the side panel talk. A deadpan monologue in a typewriter face down the side panel: the oats were grown thirty-eight miles from where the carton was filled, they…

    A spec brand, and why

The first answered a minimalist oat brand. This one answers the loud one, which is harder, because that identity is a voice rather than a look. The temptation is to copy the voice. The discipline was to keep the posture and build a new language for it.

Texas rodeo broadsides gave us that language: several wood-type faces on one poster, stacked in bands, printed rough on cheap board. It is loud, it is regional, and it has nothing to do with Sweden.

Three SKUs. Barista in barn red, Everyday in denim blue, Unsweetened in prairie green. Same board, two inks each, colour on one band only.

Front and side together: broadside bands on the face, the monologue in typewriter down the panel.

Rough letterpress coverage on absorbent board, and the stamp lifting early at one edge. That is the finish, not a flaw.

INGREDIENTS, ALL THREE OF THEM. Water, Texas oats, sea salt, in wood type, with a QR for the curious.
