    About Spot UV Finishes

Spot UV — also called spot gloss or spot varnish — is a clear coating applied to specific areas of a printed card. The coated areas become glossy while the surrounding matte surface stays flat, creating a visible contrast that highlights your design elements.

Flat spot UV sits flush with the paper. The shine is visible when light hits the card at the right angle, but the surface feels smooth. Raised spot UV builds the clear coating into a physical layer above the paper — approximately 50 microns tall — creating a tactile edge you can feel with your fingertips.

Both effects work best on matte laminated papers. Silk laminate provides a smooth, even contrast with the gloss. Soft touch laminate provides a velvet texture that makes the raised gloss feel even more dramatic by comparison. Combining spot UV with metallic foil on the same card creates a layered premium finish — glossy, metallic, and matte textures all in one.

    Spot UV questions

What is the difference between flat and raised spot UV?

Flat spot UV sits flush with the paper surface: you see the shine but feel smooth. Raised spot UV builds the gloss into a physical layer approximately 50 microns tall that you can feel with your fingertips.

Can you combine spot UV with foil?

Yes. Our Custom Spot UV product allows you to add metallic foil accents alongside flat or raised spot UV on the same card, creating a multi-texture premium finish.

What paper works best with spot UV?

Both silk laminate and soft touch (velvet) laminate work beautifully. Silk provides a smooth, even contrast. Soft touch provides a velvet texture that makes raised gloss feel even more dramatic.

How long do custom spot UV business cards take?

About 3 weeks after proof approval (an estimate). Every order includes a free digital proof for your review.
