Eight woods, one laser, one pass

Our own sample-pack wood cards: cherry, maple, beech, bamboo, sapele, walnut, birch and basswood, all carrying the same beaver illustration and species lockup, laser-engraved in a single pass on 0.6 mm solid wood sheet.

Business-cards for Print Peppermint sample pack with 2 × 3.5 in, rounded corners, 0.6 mm solid wood sheet, 8 species, single-pass laser engraving and no ink, no coating.

    The idea

A wood card is an easy thing to sell badly. Customers ask for "wood" and get whatever the shop stocks. We wanted a sample pack that answered the real question, which is not whether wood works but which wood.

    Three rules

    1. 01One artwork, eight burn rates. One artwork, eight calibrated laser passes. Power and speed change per species; the drawing never does. That is what makes the set comparab…
    2. 02Line weight for the softest wood. Floored every stroke at 0.3 mm and let the hatching read as tone rather than individual lines. It holds on bamboo and still looks fine on c…
    3. 03Nothing on top. Left it raw. The engraving is burned in, not printed on, so there is nothing to scuff off.

    Why we made it

So we cut the same card eight times, one per species, with the same beaver and the same lockup. Put them side by side and the decision makes itself.

Macro of laser engraving in solid cherry wood showing the burn inside the grain
Cherry, macro. The engraving sits in the grain with a faint scorch halo; the pores stay open around it.
Sapele, cherry and bamboo wood business cards stepped to show the 0.6 mm sheet thickness
Sapele, cherry, bamboo. Three points on the colour range, and the sheet thickness at the cut edge.

    Start from these materials

Same paper, foil and finish, locked in — nothing of Print Peppermint sample pack's artwork comes with it.
