What is a soft touch business card?

A soft touch business card is printed in full colour on both sides, then covered with a thin matte laminate that has a slight drag under your thumb and no glare. Ours are 19pt, start at 113 USD for 100 or 121 USD for 250, and ship in 3–4 business days after a person-checked proof is approved.

What velvet business cards feel like

Run a thumb across a soft-touch card and it doesn't glide the way gloss does. There's a faint drag, a little like the skin of a peach. That's why people call it velvet or suede, though there's no fabric in it: it's a thin matte film over the print.

The film swallows light. Black looks blacker than on matte, navy goes inky, and there's no glare under office lights. At 19pt the card is about two-thirds the thickness of a credit card, noticeably stiffer than a 16pt card.

It's the finish that makes people pause, flip the card over, and run their thumb across it again.

Dark designs printed on white stock show a fine white edge.

Three things soft touch can't do (and what we do instead)

    1. It won't take an emboss, deboss or letterpress.

The laminate is a stiff film; press a die into it and it creases or springs back instead of holding a clean impression. So we don't sell embossed soft touch. What works on this card: raised spot UV or raised foil, built up on top of the film, so your logo still stands proud. If you want the logo pressed into the paper, that's an embossed business card on cotton.

    2. A dark design shows a white edge.

The card is white stock printed in colour, so if your design is black right to the edge, a hairline of white shows at the cut. We point it out on your proof. If a solid dark edge matters, the true black (dyed-through) cards in our black business cards range, or painted edge business cards, are made for it.

    3. It isn't fingerprint-proof, and it won't take a pen.

Soft touch hides glare, not handling: large dark areas can show marks from fingers over time. And ink won't sit on the film, so for appointment cards people write on, choose uncoated business cards.

We'd rather tell you before you order than after.

Raised gold foil wordmark on a charcoal soft touch business card on black stone

    Raised foil

Gold, silver or holographic foil built up on the soft-touch surface, one foil colour per design, front or both sides. Raised lines and gaps target 0.3 mm, with a 0.17 mm floor; only detail below that floor needs a local adjustment. No rounded corners on this build.

Black soft-touch business card with the Print Peppermint mark and fine arcs in raised clear gloss

    Raised spot UV

Clear gloss built up on one element: a logo, a name, a pattern. Gloss against velvet is the strongest contrast this card can do. Keep it to under about a third of the card so cards don't stick together in the box. No rounded corners.

    Black, done properly

Soft touch is where printed black looks its best. Our Standard black cards print black edge to edge on this same 19pt card, then add raised spot UV (black on black, the mark appears when the light catches it) or raised gold, silver or holographic foil.

    Square, mini and rounded

Square 2.5 x 2.5 in and mini 3.5 x 1.5 in (1 x 3 in on request) at the same price as standard. Rounded corners are a 1/8 in radius die cut.

    Thicker soft touch

Want the same touch on a card that feels like a bank card? As a Custom build we make 32pt soft touch with pressed foil and painted edges. About 3 weeks after proof.

See your logo on soft touch before you order

Upload your logo and the Studio shows it on a soft-touch card in a couple of minutes, with raised foil or gloss if you want to try them. It's a rendering, so read it as direction: colours and small type are set by a person at proof. It's the fastest way to know whether your mark suits a dark velvet card.

    How proofs work

Soft touch business cards: questions we get

What is a soft touch finish on a business card?

It's a thin matte laminate film bonded over the printed card. It has no glare, makes dark colours look deeper, and has a slight drag under your thumb that smooth coatings don't. Ours goes on both sides of a 19pt card.

Are velvet, suede and soft touch business cards the same thing?

Yes, they're different names for the same kind of finish: a velvet or suede-feel matte laminate, which is why you'll also see it called velvet lamination. There's no fabric in it; the "velvet" is the feel, not a texture you can see. Our velvet laminated cards are listed as soft touch.

Are soft touch business cards worth it?

If your design is dark, or you want people to notice the card in their hand, yes: it's the cheapest way to change how a card feels without adding a process. If your card is mostly type on white and budget leads, matte is glare-free too at about half the price (58 USD vs 121 USD for 250).

How much do soft touch business cards cost?

113 USD for 100, 121 USD for 250, 127 USD for 500 and 153 USD for 1,000, with full colour on both sides, a person-checked proof and free shipping within the continental US included. Rounded corners cost a little more.

How long do soft touch business cards take?

Soft touch ships in 3–4 business days after you approve your proof, then 1–3 business days by UPS Ground within the US. These are estimates, not guaranteed delivery dates. Tell us your deadline when you order.

Can you emboss or deboss soft touch business cards?

No. The laminate is a stiff film and won't hold a clean impression, so we don't sell embossed or letterpressed soft touch. On this card you can raise your logo with raised foil or raised spot UV instead. For a pressed-in logo, choose an embossed card on cotton.

Can I add foil or spot UV to soft touch?

Yes. Raised foil (gold, silver or holographic, one colour per design) and raised spot UV both go on top of the soft-touch film on our Standard line: raised spot UV from 105 USD and raised foil from 105 USD for 100. Raised lines and gaps target 0.3 mm, with a 0.17 mm floor, and these builds come with square corners.

Do soft touch cards show fingerprints?

They hide glare, not every mark. Large dark areas can show handling marks over time. Lighter designs show almost nothing. The sample pack is the honest way to judge it.

Is soft touch a type of card stock?

Soft touch is the finish, not the paper. Our soft-touch cards are 19pt card stock (about 0.5 mm) laminated on both sides. As a Custom build we also make 32pt soft-touch cards.

Can I write on soft touch business cards?

Not reliably; pen ink sits on the film and smudges. For cards people write on, choose uncoated.

Should business cards be glossy or matte?

Matte for type-led cards, gloss for photos. Soft touch is a third answer: matte-looking, thicker and with a feel people notice. All the finishes are compared on our classic business cards page.

Can I feel soft touch before I order?

Yes. The sample pack is 8 USD with free shipping within the continental US, and you get 10 USD back on your first order. You can also upload your logo to the Studio and see it on soft touch in minutes (a rendering, not a proof).
