    What are mini business cards?

Mini business cards, also called skinny, slim or little business cards, are 3.5 × 1.5 inches: as wide as a standard card, half an inch shorter. Ours start at 52 USD for 100 on 16pt matte and ship in 3–4 business days after you approve a person-checked proof. Custom builds go up to 32pt cotton with pressed foil, in about 3 weeks.

32pt triplex, black core (Layered Black Core, Standard)

Three plies pressed together: white faces with a black layer running through the middle. On a skinny card the long edge does a lot of the talking, and this one shows a fine black line all the way round. Twice the thickness of a 16pt card, shipping in 3–4 business days after proof approval.

What a 32pt mini card feels like

A hand holding a skinny business card between two fingers, the card spanning the fingers with its black core edge visible

Hold a mini card at its ends and the first thing you notice is length without height: a strip, not a rectangle. On 16pt that strip flexes a little, like a good ticket. On 32pt it doesn't move. It's about a credit card thick, and it lands in the hand with a small, definite weight.

Turn it edge-on. A triplex card shows a fine black line between two white faces; a painted edge shows a stripe of colour. On a card this narrow you see the edge every time it's picked up.

Slide it into a wallet slot and it sits below a standard card, leaving the top of it visible.

“A small card on thin paper feels like a raffle ticket. Make it thick and it feels deliberate.”
14pt, 32pt and 48pt business cards stacked side by side with a steel ruler, showing the difference in thickness
Standard-size cards shown; the thickness is the same on mini.

Three things that go wrong on a skinny card

A mini card has about two-thirds of a standard card's height to work with. Here's what goes wrong when you forget that, and what we do instead.

    1. It's thin, so it feels cheap

A small card on 16pt stock reads as a ticket or a tag, not a business card. The fix is thickness rather than more decoration: 32pt triplex or a Custom 32pt card usually costs less than piling on finishes, and it changes how the card lands in someone's hand.

See the 32pt black core card
    2. Too much type, too small

A mini card is 38 mm tall. Take 3 mm of safe margin top and bottom and you have 32 mm for everything. Squeeze a full contact block into that and the type drops below what prints cleanly: under 6 pt in colour (8 pt for white type knocked out of a colour, 9 pt on uncoated stock), under 7 pt in foil. Give each side one job instead. Name and mark on the front; two or three contact lines on the back. A person checks every file before print and will tell you if a line is too small.

minimum line weight and type size
    3. A thin border shows every wobble

Cards are cut in stacks, and the cut can drift slightly. A border close to the edge of a long, narrow card makes that drift easy to see, because one side looks thicker than the other. Skip the frame, or bring it well inside the edge. Full-bleed colour that runs off the edge hides the drift.

Mini card options, and what each one can't do

14pt, 32pt and 48pt business cards stacked side by side with a steel ruler, showing the difference in thickness
    Standard-size cards shown.

    Thickness: 32pt and 48pt

Custom Thick builds come in 32pt, about the thickness of a credit card, or 48pt, half as thick again, on cotton, silk or soft touch. On a mini card, thickness does more than any finish: the narrow strip stops flexing and lands in the hand with a definite weight. If you upgrade one thing, upgrade this.

Can't: 48pt is stiff enough that some people find it hard to tuck into a full wallet. 32pt slides in easily.

    thick business cards

    Standard-size cards shown.

    Black core (triplex)

White, black, white: three plies bonded into one 32pt card, so every edge shows a fine black line with no paint involved. A skinny card is picked up by its long edge, so that line gets seen every time. It's on our Standard line, shipping in 3–4 business days after you approve the proof.

Can't: On our fastest line it's print only: no foil, no painted edge. For either, go Custom.

    layered black core business cards
Macro of a gold foil mark pressed into white cotton paper

    Hot foil

A heated metal die presses a thin metal film onto the card. On cotton it sits in a slight bite you can feel with your thumb; on silk it's crisp and bright. On a mini card, keep foil for the name or the mark and print the rest in ink, so the one shiny thing has room around it.

Can't: Fine detail survives foil: we design to 0.15 mm and adjust only lines under 0.1 mm or internal gaps under 0.15 mm. Foil type stays at 7 pt or larger; a gradient becomes one flat tone.

    foil business cards

    Standard-size cards shown.

    Painted edge

The finished stack is clamped and the edge is painted in one colour, so the colour runs all the way round the card. On 32pt it's a clear line; on 48pt, a band. On a skinny card the two long edges carry most of it, which is why a strong colour against a white face works so well here.

Can't: It can't follow notches, windows or internal cuts, and foil has to stay 3 mm in from a painted edge. For mini, painted edges are on Custom Thick only.

    painted edge business cards
Charcoal soft-touch mini business card with a white wordmark, its matte laminate absorbing the light

    Soft touch

A matte laminate film with a slight drag under the thumb, on 20pt stock. Dark designs go deeper and there's no glare, so a small card stays easy to read under shop or bar lighting. Printed dark, the cut edge shows the white paper inside as a thin white line around the card.

Can't: No emboss or letterpress on soft touch: the film won't take a clean impression.

    soft touch business cards

    Rounded corners

A small, soft radius cut on all four corners, 1/8 in as standard. A long, narrow card has four sharp points sitting in a pocket or a wallet; a radius takes them off and makes the card feel friendlier in the hand. On 16pt matte it adds a few dollars: 64 USD against 58 USD for 250.

Can't: A painted edge on rounded corners is something we confirm before we promise it. A foiled (gilded) edge works with rounded corners.

“On a mini card I'd spend on thickness first. If there's budget left, foil the mark and stop there.”

    How proofing works

    Mini business card questions

What size is a mini business card?

Ours are 3.5 × 1.5 inches (89 × 38 mm), the same width as a standard US card and half an inch shorter. "Mini", "skinny", "slim" and "little" are used loosely across the industry, so you'll also see 3.5 × 1.75 in, 3 × 1 in and 2.75 × 1.1 in elsewhere. We also make a 1 × 3 in mini on request; ask for a quote. A 2 × 3 card is a standard card turned portrait, not a mini.

How much do mini business cards cost?

From 52 USD for 100 and 58 USD for 250 on 16pt matte. Soft touch is 121 USD for 250, and our 32pt black-core triplex is 126 USD for 500. Custom builds with pressed foil on 32pt cotton start at 310 USD for 250. Full colour on both sides is included on Standard cards.

Are mini business cards cheaper than standard ones?

No. On every build we sell today, a mini card costs the same as a standard card at the same quantity: our prices are set by stock, finish and quantity, not by trim size. Choose mini because the shape suits your brand, not to save money.

How long do mini business cards take?

Standard cards (matte, glossy, silk, soft touch, triplex and flat foil) ship in 3–4 business days after you approve your proof, and Custom builds such as 32pt cotton with pressed foil about 3 weeks. These are estimates. Shipping within the continental US is free.

Do mini business cards fit in a wallet or cardholder?

Yes. They're the same width as a standard card, so they slide into any standard slot and sit half an inch lower. A 48pt card is stiff, and some people find it hard to tuck into a full wallet; 32pt fits easily.

What should I put on a mini business card?

Less than on a standard card. With 32 mm of usable height, give each side one job: your name and mark on the front, two or three contact lines on the back. Keep coloured type at 6 pt or larger (8 pt for white type knocked out of a colour, 9 pt on uncoated stock) and foil type at 7 pt or larger. We check every file and will tell you if something is too small to print cleanly.

Can I get foil on mini business cards?

Yes, two ways. Flat hot foil on silk stock is Standard and ships in 3–4 business days after proof approval, from 210 USD for 500. Pressed foil on 32pt cotton, silk, black or coloured stock is a Custom build, about 3 weeks, from 310 USD for 250. Fine detail survives foil: we design to 0.15 mm and only adjust lines under 0.1 mm or internal gaps under 0.15 mm.

Can a mini business card have a QR code?

Yes, on the back. We print QR codes at least 20 mm square in flat dark ink with a clear margin around them, so they scan at arm's length. That leaves room beside the code for a name or a short line. QR codes are never foiled or embossed: the shine and relief stop phones reading them.

What's the smallest quantity of mini business cards I can order?

100 cards on our Standard stocks (matte, glossy, uncoated, silk, soft touch). Custom builds start at 250. The 32pt triplex and flat foil cards start at 500. Larger quantities cost much less per card: 16pt matte is about 52 USD for 100 but 75 USD for 1,000.

Can you make tiny business cards smaller than 3.5 × 1.5?

Yes: a 1 × 3 in mini is available on request. For other small sizes, such as 2.75 × 1.1 in, ask for a quote with your size and quantity, and we'll tell you what's possible and what it costs. At that size there's room for a name or a handle, not a contact block.

    Are skinny business cards professional?

They are when the design is restrained. A skinny card with a single mark and a couple of lines reads as deliberate, especially on thick stock. The ones that look unprofessional are thin cards crammed with a full contact block. If your role needs an address, phone, email and website on one side, a standard card serves you better.

Can I see a mini card before I order?

The sample pack (8 USD, with 10 USD back on your first order) has our stocks and finishes in your hand. You can also upload your logo to the Studio and see it on a mini card in a couple of minutes. That's a rendering, not a proof.
