Custom Foil Business Cards on True Black Stock

True black paper with metallic foil, or thick printed black with full creative control. True black stock is black all the way through — face, back, and edges. Printed black on 32pt gives you thickness and multi-color artwork capability. Either way, your design is applied with hot foil stamping.

True Black Stock vs Thick Printed Black

True Black Stock: The paper itself is dyed black. No ink is needed for the black areas — the material is black all the way through, including the edges. This means your design can ONLY include foil elements — standard CMYK printing is invisible on black paper. The result is a card that is black from every angle with metallic foil as the only visible design element. Black Soft Touch has a velvet, light-absorbing surface. Black Uncoated Cotton has a natural, textured surface with visible fiber.

Thick Printed Black: Full-bleed CMYK rich black is printed on white paper stock (32pt silk or soft touch). The surface is saturated black, but the paper edges reveal white. This approach allows multi-color artwork — you can include colored logos, photos, or gradients alongside the black, with foil layered on top. Add black edge painting to cover the white edges for a fully black appearance from all angles.

In summary: True black stock = pure, foil-only, black edges. Printed black = flexible artwork, white edges (coverable with edge painting).

    Foil Details

Hot foil stamping on this product uses traditional heated die stamping — metallic foil is pressed into the card surface with a custom die.

The foil sits flush with the surface for a clean, smooth finish.

Foil areas should be supplied as vector artwork. Fine text, logos, borders, and patterns all work well. Fine detail survives foil: lines hold to 0.1 mm; we design to 0.15 mm and adjust only lines below the floor.

One foil color is included in the base price. For multiple foil colors on the same card, request a custom quote.

    File Requirements
    • Upload your print-ready files after checkout
    • Accepted formats: PDF, AI, PSD, EPS (vector preferred for foil)
    • True Black Stock: supply only your foil elements on a single layer. No background artwork needed — the paper IS the background.
    • Thick Printed Black: supply your full artwork including the black background (rich black: C:40 M:40 Y:40 K:100). Foil elements on a separate layer.
    • Multi-color elements on printed black: include in your CMYK artwork as normal. Note in your order which elements are foil and which are printed.
    • We'll send a digital proof for your approval before production
    About Custom Black Cards

A true black card has a quality that printed black can't replicate. Hold it edge-on and the black continues — no white line, no coating to scratch through, no reveal of what's underneath. It is what it is: black paper with metallic foil.

Black soft touch is the more contemporary of the two true black stocks. The velvet surface absorbs light completely — it's as close to pure black as a physical surface can get. The contrast between the light-absorbing surface and the light-reflecting foil is extreme and immediate.

Black uncoated cotton has a warmer, more organic character. The fiber texture is visible and touchable. It feels handmade and considered — closer to fine stationery than a corporate card. Silver or white foil on black cotton creates a quieter, more understated luxury.

For customers who need multi-color artwork on a black card, thick printed black is the practical choice. A 32pt silk or soft touch card with full-bleed black gives you the visual impact of a black card with the flexibility to include your brand's colors. Adding black edge painting completes the illusion — the card appears black from every angle.

    Black card questions

What is the difference between printed black and true black stock?

True black stock is paper dyed black throughout, edges and all. Printed black uses white paper with black ink, leaving white edges unless the edge is finished.

Why do some black business cards have white edges?

Cards printed on white stock show the paper's white edge. True black stock eliminates this. On dark cards, edges are foiled, never painted.

Can you print color on a true black business card?

No. Standard inks are translucent and invisible on black paper. True black cards use metallic foil exclusively. For multi-color artwork, choose thick printed black.

What foil colors look best on black business cards?

Gold gives a striking contrast between warm metallic and matte black. Silver creates a modern look, rose gold feels warm and contemporary, and white provides bold high-contrast.

How do you cover white edges on black business cards?

Dark and black edges are foiled, never painted. An edge foil in black, gold or silver wraps the edge so the card reads as one colour from every angle.
