    How it's built

    Outside to inside

Exploded view of a matte black pouch laminate: matte film, metallised PET and polyethylene sealant.
    1. 1Matte or soft-touch outer film (print on its underside)
    2. 2Metallised PET
    3. 3Polyethylene sealant

    Look and feel

Flat matte, or soft-touch with a velvety hand. Highlights only appear where varnish is. Dark versions show fingerprints and scuffs, so handle the hero shots with gloves.

    Printing on it

Printed on the back of the clear outer film, so the ink sits sealed inside the laminate and can't scratch off. Registered spot gloss over matte is the classic move. A small hot foil mark is possible.

    Barrier and shelf life

Medium-high. The metallised layer is much thinner than foil. Fine for whole bean on a normal shelf cycle; for long-life ground coffee, step up to foil.

    Run sizes

Digitally printed pouches start around 500 per design. Plate-printed (rotogravure) pouches make sense from about 10,000 per design. Below 500, a stock bag with a printed or foil label is the cleaner route, and the label is where foil, letterpress and deboss actually work.

    After use

A mixed laminate. Not recyclable in most household streams.
