About 3 weeks after proof approval, an estimate.

Our custom hang tags are 32pt or 48pt cotton, stamped with real hot foil, drilled and strung with cotton string. The fixed-price Signature tag is 2 × 3.5 inches and starts at $249 for 100, or $395 for 250, which is $1.58 a tag. The Atelier tag, 48pt duplex cotton with foil and a deboss, starts at $675 for 250.
Hang tags take about 3 weeks of production after you approve the proof, plus transit. That's an estimate, not a guaranteed in-hand date. Letterpress, printed backs, custom shapes and painted edges are quoted through the Studio.

Signature, Atelier or custom: which hang tags to order
We price a tag with everything first, then scale back to what it actually needs to do. These are the three builds most brands land on.
| Build | What you get | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Signature (what we'd recommend first) | 2 × 3.5 in, 32pt cotton in six colours, one hot foil on the front, blank back, drilled and strung with cotton string. | From $249 for 100 | Apparel, accessories and home goods where the tag carries your mark and nothing else. |
| Atelier | 2 × 3.5 in, 48pt duplex cotton (two sheets bonded into one), hot foil and a deboss, drilled and strung. Bonding two sheets means the deboss doesn't show through on the back. | From $675 for 250 | Jewelry, fragrance, candles and small-batch goods, where the weight of the tag in the hand is part of the product. |
| Custom | Letterpress, a printed back, a die-cut shape, painted edges, waxed cord, an elastic loop or eyelets, any of our sizes. | Quoted | Tags that need care text or a QR code on the back, or a shape that matches the product. |
Start with Signature at 250.
At 32pt the tag is already about as thick as a credit card, well past the thin coated tags on a lot of store racks. Thick hang tags earn their weight, but most brands don't need 48pt to make the point. Move up to Atelier when the tag sits next to a small, expensive object and has to hold its own beside it. Go custom when the back has a job to do.
Why a thin coated hang tag reads cheap
Many cardstock hang tags on a rack are thin coated card, printed digitally, often with digital foil: a metal film laid onto toner with no die and no impression. You can feel it the moment you turn one over. It flexes, the corners curl, and the logo sits flat on the surface like a photograph of itself.
Cotton behaves differently. Real hot foil is a metal film pressed onto the sheet with heat and a metal die, and on soft cotton it leaves a slight bite you can feel with your thumb. A deboss sinks into the fibres instead of cracking them. A 32pt cotton tag stays flat on the garment and doesn't flutter.
Cotton has rules too, and we'd rather you hear them now. Big solid foil panels pick up the paper's texture, which we treat as character, not a defect, and our press team checks any large flood before we promise a smooth finish. And because cotton is soft, a tag that gets handled all day on a shop floor can soften at the corners. For most products that's fine: cotton wears in like a good linen shirt rather than scuffing like plastic.

Hang tag papers: cotton, duplex, Colorplan and kraft
The fixed-price tags are cotton. Everything else in this table is a custom tag, quoted.
| Paper | What it is | The rule we design around |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton, 32pt | Soft, toothy and uncoated. Pearl white, ecru, blush, sage, navy and black. | Letterpress ink is see-through, so on navy and black cotton we use foil, and white on dark cotton is white pigment foil, never white ink. |
| Duplex cotton, 48pt | Two sheets bonded into one tag, each pressed before bonding. Can carry a coloured core. | The core shows as a fine stripe on every edge. Each face takes its own impression without ghosting through to the other. |
| Heavier cotton, up to 50pt | A single, very stiff tag. Our Flânage tag ran on 50pt bright white cotton. | Very thick stock gets wider minimum gaps in the foil, so fine detail is checked at proof. |
| Colorplan | Smooth paper dyed all the way through, in a wide range of colours. | Ink shifts darker on coloured paper. For a light mark on a coloured tag, we use foil. |
| Kraft | Natural brown, recycled-looking board. | Ink takes on the brown of the board, so a light mark is opaque metallic or pigment foil. For true colour, start from a white sheet. |

Finishes for custom hang tags, and the rule behind each
| Finish | How it works | The honest constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Hot foil | Heat, pressure and a metal die transfer a metal or pigment film onto the tag. Foil hang tags in gold, silver, rose gold, copper, black or white on the fixed-price tags. | Foil lines hold to 0.1 mm; we design to 0.15 mm with gaps around 0.25 mm. Foil type stays 7 pt or larger. A gradient becomes one solid tone. Black foil on black cotton reads as a quiet sheen, not contrast. |
| Letterpress | An inked plate pressed into the cotton, so you feel each line under your thumb. Custom tags only. | Light paper only, because the ink is translucent. Fine type and lines look beautiful; large solid areas print with a soft, mottled texture. |
| Blind deboss | Your mark pressed into the tag with no ink or foil. It reads by shadow. | On black cotton it's almost invisible. If the mark has to be read, we add foil in the impression. On a single sheet, a deep deboss shows on the back, which is why Atelier is duplex. |
| Painted edges | Colour applied to the edge of a clamped stack of tags, so every tag in the stack gets the same band. | Any thickness can be painted; 48pt shows a bolder band. Edge paint can't follow notches or tight curves, and on rounded corners our press team confirms it before we promise it. Navy and black cotton tags are never edge-painted: dark tags get a foiled edge instead. |
| Die-cut shapes | A steel-rule die cuts the tag to your outline, from a rounded corner to a full silhouette. | Tight inside corners get a small radius, because a blade can't turn a razor-sharp corner. |
Two rules apply to every tag. QR codes always print in flat dark ink, never foil or deboss, because shine and relief confuse a phone camera. And foil stays at least 3 mm in from the edge and the hole, or runs right off the edge, because a sliver of foil at the trim looks like a mistake.

Hang tag string, eyelets and attachments
Our fixed-price tags are custom hang tags with string included. The attachment is half the tag, so choose it by how the product gets handled, not only by how it looks.
- Cotton string (fixed-price tags): natural, black or white. Soft, knots cleanly and suits most apparel and home goods. Our fixed-price tags arrive drilled and strung.
- Waxed cotton cord: a little stiffer and holds a crisp knot. Our PTC tag ran 2-inch black waxed cotton through a 5 mm hole.
- Elastic loop: slips over a bottle neck, a jar lid or a candle, with no knot to tie on the packing line.
- Safety pin: for knitwear and delicate fabric where string snags, or where the tag goes through a seam.
- Metal eyelet: a ring that reinforces the hole for heavy products or tags that get pulled on.
The honest note: the hole is the weakest point of any tag. We drill it 3–5 mm wide and keep it about 6 mm from the edge, so the cotton around it doesn't tear. If your product is heavy or the tag will get yanked, choose an eyelet or a 48pt tag rather than a bigger hole.

Hang tag sizes and where the hole goes
The fixed-price tags are 2 × 3.5 inches, the standard size. The others below are custom.
| Tag | Inches | Millimetres | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (fixed-price tags) | 2 × 3.5 | 51 × 89 | Hole 3–5 mm, about 6 mm from the edge |
| Small | 1.5 × 3 · 1.25 × 2.5 | 38 × 76 · 32 × 64 | Accessories and small goods. Keep foil type at 7 pt or larger. |
| Square | 2 × 2 · 2.5 × 2.5 | 51 × 51 · 64 × 64 | Candles, jars and boxes |
| Bottle neck tag | 2.5 × 3.5 · 3 × 4 | 64 × 89 · 76 × 102 | Die-cut neck opening, 32–38 mm |
| Jewelry card | 2 × 2 · 2 × 3 · 2.5 × 3.5 | 51 × 51 · 51 × 76 · 64 × 89 | Two 1.5–2 mm holes, 10–15 mm apart, for earrings |
| Round | 2.5 diameter | 64 diameter | Die-cut circle. A painted edge on a circle is confirmed by our press team before we promise it. |
| Custom die-cut | Your outline | – | Any outline; shapes larger than 5 × 7 in get their own cutting-die quote |

Hang tags for clothing, jewelry, candles and bottles
Custom clothing tags and garment hang tags
The 2 × 3.5 Signature tag on cotton string is the usual choice for custom clothing hang tags, or a safety pin for knitwear. Size, fibre and care text go on the back in ink, as a custom tag. Prices are usually left off the tag, so one design works across sizes and seasons. Sewn-in woven labels are a different product, made on a loom; we make the printed tag that hangs beside them.
Jewelry hang tags
A small tag on a fine cord, or a jewelry card with two holes for earrings. Small means the foil rules matter more: keep the mark simple and foil type at 7 pt or larger, and put anything smaller in ink.
Tags for candles, jars and bottles
A square tag on an elastic loop around the lid, or a die-cut neck tag that drops over the bottle. Painted edges and duplex cores show well here, because people turn the tag over in their hands before they buy.
Tags for retail bags and boxes
A tag tied to a bag handle or a ribbon carries the same foil as your box, so the whole thing looks like one brand. The matching pieces are further down this page.

Hang tags we've made

Case study
Flânage champagne foil hang tag
A square-cornered tag on 50pt bright white cotton, drilled for attachment, with the mark in champagne foil. The heavy cotton gives the tag its structure; the champagne keeps the mark quiet against the bright sheet.

Case study
PTC debossed swing tag on waxed cotton
A 2 × 3.5 swing tag on 32pt off-white uncoated stock. The palm tree is blind debossed, not printed, so the tag reads as a mark before it reads as a label. The hole was punched after the deboss, with a full hole's width of margin above it, then strung with black waxed cotton cord and a safety pin.

Case study
Infinited Fiber: a card cut like a clothing tag
Strictly a business card, but built like a tag: 100% recycled cotton triplex around a red core, die-cut as a swing tag with angled corners and a punched hole, the name blind embossed. The red shows only at the edges and inside the hole.
Match your hang tags to the box, the insert and the seal
A hang tag is often the first piece of a matched kit. Our packaging insert cards use the same 32pt cotton and the same foils, from $259 for 100. Foil seals close the tissue or the mailer in the same foil colours, from $195 for 250. Order them together and we check them against one approved spec, so the gold on the seal is the gold on the tag.
One thing worth knowing up front: the same foil looks slightly brighter on smooth seal stock than on textured cotton, because the cotton fibres break up the reflection. We'll show you that on the proof rather than promise an identical look.

How ordering hang tags works
Hang tag printing here takes five steps, and nothing is stamped until you approve the proof in step 3.
1
Choose.
Order a fixed-price Signature or Atelier tag above, or describe the tag you want in the Studio.
2
Send your artwork.
Upload it at checkout or later. If it isn't press-ready, our designers rebuild it as clean vector files, or add design help for $95.
3
Approve a free proof.
A person checks every foil line, the hole position and any QR code. Nothing is stamped until you approve.
4
Production.
About 3 weeks after proof approval. That's an estimate, not a guarantee.
5
Delivery.
Hang tag orders ship free within the continental US.
If the tags need to be on product for a launch, tell us the date before you order, and we'll say honestly whether it's realistic. As a rough guide, allow about five weeks from order to arrival, which leaves time for artwork and proof. That's an estimate, not a guarantee. Rush moves your order up the queue; it doesn't guarantee a delivery day.
Feel the cotton and the foil before you order
Our sample kit is $8 and comes with a $10 credit toward your first order. It's built around business cards, not hang tags, but it includes cotton stock like our tags and the hot foil swatch card, with 40 stamped foils. Hold the foil against the paper in your own light before you choose.
Hang tag questions, answered
What is the minimum order for custom hang tags?
100 tags for our fixed-price Signature tag, and 250 for the 48pt Atelier tag. Custom hang tags with letterpress, a printed back or a die-cut shape also start at 100. If you need fewer, ask; smaller runs are possible on request, but the price per tag rises steeply because the foil die and press setup cost the same at any quantity.
How much do custom hang tags cost?
Our Signature tag, 2 × 3.5 inches on 32pt cotton with one hot foil, is 249 $US for 100, 395 $US for 250, 525 $US for 500 and 849 $US for 1,000, drilled and strung. The 48pt duplex Atelier tag with foil and a deboss is 675 $US for 250, 925 $US for 500 and 1 395 $US for 1,000. Thin, digitally printed tags cost a fraction of that. The difference is real hot foil pressed with a metal die, thick cotton and a person checking your file before anything is stamped.
How long do hang tags take?
About 3 weeks of production after you approve the proof, plus ground transit. That's an estimate, not a guaranteed in-hand date. If you have a launch date, tell us before you order and we'll say honestly whether it's realistic. Rush moves your order up the queue but doesn't guarantee a delivery day.
Do the hang tags come with string?
Yes. Our fixed-price tags are drilled and strung with cotton string in natural, black or white. Custom tags can use waxed cotton cord, an elastic loop, a safety pin or a metal eyelet instead.
What string is best for hang tags?
Plain cotton string suits most apparel and home goods and knots cleanly. Waxed cotton cord holds a crisper knot and looks more finished. Elastic loops work best on bottles, jars and candles, and a safety pin is kinder to knitwear than string. For a heavy product, add a metal eyelet so the hole doesn't tear.
Should I choose a drilled hole or a metal eyelet?
A drilled hole is enough for most tags on 32pt or 48pt cotton. We drill it 3–5 mm wide and about 6 mm from the edge so the cotton around it holds. Choose a metal eyelet when the product is heavy, when the tag gets pulled on, or when you want the ring as part of the look.
Can you print on the back of the hang tag?
Yes, as a custom tag. The fixed-price tags have a blank back. Care text, sizes, a URL or a QR code print in ink on the back, never in foil, so they stay sharp and scannable. On a single sheet, a deep impression on the front shows on the back, so for a printed back with a deboss on the front we use a duplex tag.
Can you print prices, sizes or SKUs on each tag?
We usually recommend leaving prices off, so one tag design works across sizes and seasons; most brands add a price sticker at the shop. If you need sizes or SKUs printed, ask for a quote. Anything that changes from tag to tag prints in ink, because foil needs its own metal die for every version.
What is the best paper for hang tags?
Thick uncoated cotton, 32pt or heavier. It takes hot foil and deboss with real depth, stays flat on the product and doesn't curl like thin coated cardstock. For a coloured tag we also use dyed-through Colorplan, kraft or duplex cotton with a coloured core.
Do you make letterpress hang tags?
Yes, as custom tags. Letterpress presses ink into the cotton so you feel each line. It works on light papers only, because letterpress ink is translucent. On navy or black cotton we use foil instead, and white on a dark tag is white pigment foil.
Can my hang tags match my labels, inserts and packaging?
Yes. Our insert cards use the same 32pt cotton and foils, and our foil seals (sticker labels for tissue and mailers) use the same foil colours. Order them together and we check them against one approved spec. The same foil looks slightly brighter on smooth sticker stock than on textured cotton, and we'll show you that on the proof.
Can I see a sample before ordering hang tags?
Yes. Our sample kit is 8 $US with a 10 $US credit toward your first order. It's built around business cards, but it includes cotton stock like our hang tags and a swatch card with 40 stamped foils, so you can judge paper and foil in your own light.
Can hang tags be die-cut into a custom shape?
Yes. Custom die-cut hang tags are cut on a steel-rule die to your outline, from rounded corners to a full silhouette. Tight inside corners get a small radius, and painted edges can't follow notches or tight curves. Shapes larger than 5 × 7 inches get their own cutting-die quote.
What size is a standard hang tag?
2 × 3.5 inches (51 × 89 mm), the size of our fixed-price tags. Smaller tags around 1.5 × 3 inches suit jewelry and accessories, 2 × 2 or 2.5 × 2.5 inch squares suit candles and jars, and bottle neck tags run about 2.5 × 3.5 or 3 × 4 inches with a die-cut opening. Any size other than 2 × 3.5 is a custom tag, and the hole is usually 3–5 mm wide, about 6 mm from the edge.
What should go on a clothing hang tag?
Keep the front for your mark, in foil or a deboss, so it reads from across the shop. The back, printed in ink on a custom tag, can carry the product name, size, fibre, care notes, your website or a QR code. Most brands leave the price off and add a sticker, so one tag works across sizes and seasons. Legally required fibre and care information usually lives on the sewn-in label, so check the rules for each market you sell in.
Tell us what the tag hangs from
Send us the product, the quantity and the date it ships. We'll recommend the paper, the foil and the string as one spec, show you the proof, and keep the tag matched to everything else in the box.
