Still deciding between the big two? Read MOO vs Vistaprint, compared on price, paper, foil and proofs.
What Moo's foil is NOT: it's not hot foil stamping. There's no custom metal die, no heated press, no real metallic leaf. The foil film is bonded to toner particles on the paper surface, not pressed into the paper under pressure. This means no tactile impression (deboss), flatter reflectivity, and a thinner metallic appearance compared to traditional hot foil.
For a dated, sourced rundown of which printers do real hot foil, see our printer comparison.
Specialty foil printers — including Print Peppermint, Mama's Sauce, Dolce Press, Studio on Fire, and others — use hot foil stamping. This is the traditional process where a custom metal die is heated and pressed into real metallic foil leaf, transferring the foil to the paper surface under heat and pressure.
The result is different in several measurable ways. The metallic reflection is deeper and more mirror-like because the foil is a continuous metallic surface rather than a film bonded to toner particles. There's a physical deboss impression where the die pressed into the paper — you can feel the foil with your fingertips. The color range is dramatically wider — most specialty printers offer 100–300+ foil colors including metallics, mattes, pigments, and holographic options. And the paper range is broader — foil can be stamped onto cotton, uncoated, colored, and textured stocks that digital foil can't reliably bond to.

Foil on cotton paper. This is the combination that most people searching for premium foil cards actually want — hot foil on thick, tactile, uncoated cotton stock. The warm off-white cotton with metallic foil pressed into its soft surface is the definitive "premium business card" feel. Moo offers a cotton option but their foil adhesion on uncoated surfaces is limited by the digital process. Hot foil stamping bonds directly to cotton under pressure with excellent adhesion and a visible impression.
More than gold and silver. Rose gold, copper, holographic, matte gold, antique gold, white foil, black foil, and hundreds of PMS-matched metallic and pigment colors. If your brand color is a specific copper or a matte champagne gold, specialty printers can match it. Moo offers gold and silver.
Foil combined with other finishes. Lamina + rilievo a secco. Foil + letterpress. Foil + edge painting. Foil + spot UV. These multi-finish combinations create cards with layered tactile and visual experiences that digital foil simply cannot replicate — they require separate physical processes applied in sequence.
Edge treatments. Painted edges in any color. Foil edges. Color core (black center layer visible at the edge). These finishing touches are visible when the card sits in a stack or is viewed from the side — a dimension that Moo's cards don't address.
True thick stock. 32pt and 48pt cotton, silk, or soft touch. Moo's "Luxe" paper is thick (their triplex with a colored seam is nice), but the paper options and thickness combinations available from specialty printers are broader. A 48pt cotton card with foil has a weight and presence that no mass-market printer matches. See our biglietti da visita di lusso.
Large quantities at better per-card pricing. Moo's pricing is competitive at 50–200 cards. But at 500+ cards, specialty printers' per-card costs are comparable or lower — because the die cost is amortized across more units. At 1,000+ cards, specialty foil is meaningfully cheaper per card than Moo for equivalent quality, and the quality is objectively higher.
Full-bleed foil coverage. Foil that extends to every edge of the card, front and/or back. Digital foil requires margins. Hot foil stamping with a properly sized die can cover the entire card surface. A card that's 100% gold foil on the front is a metallic object — not paper with metallic accents.
Cosa Moo fa meglio (onestamente)
Ease of ordering. Moo's online editor is genuinely excellent. You can design a card in your browser, see a real-time preview with foil elements highlighted, and order in 10 minutes without ever opening Illustrator. For someone who doesn't have a designer and doesn't want to learn file preparation, Moo's workflow is frictionless. Specialty printers typically require you to upload production-ready files (vector artwork with separated foil layers) — which means you either need to know Illustrator or hire someone who does.
Speed. Moo ships in 3–7 business days. Most specialty foil printers take 2–3 weeks for custom hot foil (though some, including Print Peppermint, offer Standard hot foil in 4–8 business days for standard configurations).
Low minimums. You can order 25–50 foil cards from Moo. Most specialty printers start at 100–250. If you need a small batch for an event next week, Moo is the practical choice.
Printfinity (variable data). Moo's signature feature lets you put different designs on different cards in the same order — different backs, different images, different text. This is possible because digital printing is inherently variable. Hot foil stamping uses a single die for the entire run, so every card is identical. If you need 50 cards with 50 different names in foil, Moo can do it. Hot foil can't.
Consistency at small scale. At 50 cards, Moo's digital process is extremely consistent — every card looks the same. At 50 cards from a hot foil press, quality is still excellent, but the economics of setting up a die run for 50 cards are poor. The sweet spot for hot foil is 250–1,000 cards.
Moo: approximately 39 €–60 for gold foil on Luxe stock. Per card: ~5,00 €–5,00 €.
Specialty (Print Peppermint Standard): smaller runs are possible on request; the listed standard tier starts at 100 cards at 119 €.
Winner: Moo. At this quantity, Moo is the only viable option for foil.
A 100 biglietti (piccolo lotto professionale)
Moo: approximately 65 €–90. Per card: ~5,00 €–5,00 €.
Print Peppermint Standard (raised foil on soft touch): 119 €. Per card: 5,00 €.
Moo is cheaper per card, but the Print Peppermint card is hot foil stamped on soft touch laminate — a noticeably different tactile and visual product.
A 250 biglietti (il punto di pareggio)
Moo: approximately 115 €–170. Per card: ~5,00 €–5,00 €.
Print Peppermint Standard (raised foil on soft touch): 149 €. Per card: 5,00 €.
Print Peppermint Studio (hot foil on cotton 32pt): 285 €. Per card: 5,00 €.
At this quantity, Standard foil is comparable in price to Moo — and it's hot foil stamped, not digital. Studio foil on cotton is roughly 2x Moo's price, but it's a fundamentally different product (cotton paper, tactile impression, 300+ foil color options).
Con 500 biglietti (l'ordine professionale standard)
Moo: approximately 169 €–250. Per card: ~5,00 €–5,00 €.
Print Peppermint Standard (foil piatto su seta): 209 €. Per card: 5,00 €.
Print Peppermint Studio (hot foil on cotton 32pt): 379 €. Per card: 5,00 €.
Standard hot foil at 500 cards is essentially the same price as Moo — and the quality difference is significant. This is the quantity where the argument for Moo's convenience starts to weaken against the quality advantage of hot foil.
A 1,000 biglietti (grandi volumi)
Moo: approximately 279 €–400 (if available at this quantity through business ordering). Per card: ~5,00 €–5,00 €.
Print Peppermint Standard (foil piatto su seta): 235 €. Per card: 5,00 €.
Print Peppermint Studio (hot foil on cotton 32pt): 569 €. Per card: 5,00 €.
Standard hot foil is cheaper than Moo at 1,000 cards. The die cost is fully amortized, and the per-card foil stamping cost is low at volume. Studio foil on cotton is still more expensive because you're paying for premium paper and 3-week custom production — but the per-card cost has dropped significantly.
The takeaway: Moo wins on price at low quantities (under 100) and on convenience at all quantities. Hot foil becomes price-competitive at 250+ cards and becomes cheaper at 500–1,000+ cards — while delivering a measurably higher-quality product. Gli altri operatori: Vistaprint, GotPrint, Jukebox e altri
Vistaprint: The largest online printer in the world. Their "foil" option is digital — similar to Moo's process but typically on thinner stock with less attention to color accuracy and registration. Vistaprint competes on price and speed, not quality. Their foil cards are the budget option — fine for basic metallic accents on a standard business card, not a premium product. If price is the primary concern, Vistaprint is hard to beat. If quality matters, look elsewhere.
GotPrint: A mid-market online printer with good value. Their foil offerings are digital and competitively priced. Quality is a step above Vistaprint but still in the digital foil category. A solid choice for standard foil on standard stock.
Jukebox Print: A Canadian specialty printer that offers both digital and traditional foil options. They're one of the few mid-market printers that bridge the gap between Moo-style digital and boutique hot foil. Worth investigating if you're in Canada or want a mid-tier option.
Mama's Sauce, Studio on Fire, Dolce Press, Clove St Press: Boutique letterpress and hot foil studios. These are artisan printers who produce exceptional work — often hand-fed on antique presses. Quality is at the top of the market. Pricing is premium (often 459 €–1,000+ for 250 cards), turnaround is 3–6 weeks, and minimums are 250+. The right choice for ultra-premium projects where the card is a piece of art. The tradeoff is cost and speed.
Print Peppermint's positioning: We sit between the mass-market digital printers (Moo, Vistaprint) and the artisan boutique studios (Mama's Sauce, Studio on Fire). We use hot foil stamping (same fundamental process as the boutiques) at pricing closer to the mid-market, with turnaround options ranging from 4–8 business days (Standard) to 3 weeks (Studio). The compromise: we're not hand-feeding cards on a 1920s Chandler & Price press. We're using modern foil stamping equipment that produces consistent, high-quality results at scale. For most professionals who want hot foil quality without boutique pricing or boutique timelines, that's the sweet spot.
Come decidere: uno schema di scelta
Choose Moo (or similar digital foil) if: You need fewer than 100 cards. You need them in under a week. You want to design in the browser without a designer. You want Printfinity (different designs on different cards). You want gold or silver foil on a standard coated stock. You're testing a design concept before committing to a larger order. Your budget is under 139 €.
Choose a specialty foil printer (like Print Peppermint) if: You want the foil to be tactile — you want people to feel the metallic impression when they run their finger over it. You want foil on cotton, uncoated, or colored stock. You want a foil color beyond gold and silver (rose gold, copper, holographic, matte, custom PMS match). You want to combine foil with emboss, letterpress, edge painting, or spot UV. You're ordering 250+ cards and quality is the priority. The card is a deliberate part of your brand experience, not just a utility. You have (or can get) print-ready artwork files.
Choose a boutique artisan press if: You want the absolute highest production quality available — hand-set type, antique press impression, artisanal paper. Budget is secondary to craft. Turnaround of 4–6 weeks is acceptable. Quantities of 250–500 are typical. The card is an art object.

Your design keeps its character. At Print Peppermint, Foil holds positive lines down to 0.1 mm (0.28 pt). We design to 0.15 mm (0.43 pt, 0.006 in) or thicker for the crispest strike, with gaps at 0.25 mm (0.71 pt); the gap floor is 0.15 mm. Our team measures the supplied artwork and makes only agreed, local below-floor corrections; we never simplify or bolden the mark for foil. See foil artwork preparation.
You'll need to supply artwork files. Moo lets you design in the browser. Specialty printers need you to upload production files (AI, EPS, or PDF with a separated foil layer). If you don't have these, we offer a 69 € design recreation service where our team sets up your artwork for production. You provide your logo, colors, and content — we build the print-ready files.
The proof process is different. Moo shows an on-screen preview. We send a detailed digital proof (a PDF showing your artwork on the card, the print specifications, and separated specialty layers) that you review and formally approve before production begins. This takes 1–2 days but ensures there are no surprises.
The wait is longer. Standard: 4–8 business days. Studio: about 3 weeks. If you're used to Moo's 3–5 day turnaround, build in extra time for your first order. After that, you'll learn to plan ahead.
The result is noticeably different. When you hold the first hot foil card alongside your old Moo card, you'll feel the difference immediately — literally. The deboss impression, the metallic depth, the paper weight. Most people who make the switch don't go back.
Easiest way to start: Order our kit di campioni. It includes hot foil cards on multiple papers — cotton, silk, soft touch, black stock. See and feel the difference in person before committing to a full order. Or try the Peppermint Studio — describe your brand and see three foil card concepts with real specs in about two minutes.
