Un noir parfaitement mat, sans aucun reflet, pour que rien ne concurrence le blanc. L'encre blanche n'est pas possible ici : les encres offset et typographiques sont translucides et grisent sur un papier saturé. Une dorure à pigment blanc opaque se pose en surface et reste blanche. Le papier est teinté dans la masse : une fenêtre découpée ou une tranche coupée reste noire, sans laisser apparaître de cœur clair.
