Painted edges: the detail people notice second — and remember first
An edge-painted card works on a delay. Someone takes it, reads the front, turns it — and then catches the line of color running around the whole perimeter. That little flash is the most efficient square-millimeter of branding on the card, and it's also genuinely handmade: the cards are clamped in a stack, and the exposed edges are painted, then dried, then often painted again. Machines print the faces; the edges get done the old way.
Why thickness is non-negotiable here: edge paint needs a canvas. On thin stock the painted edge is a hairline nobody sees. At 32pt — about a credit card doubled, and where premium cotton starts — the edge is a real surface, and the color reads across a table. At 48pt it's a statement. If painted edges are the reason you're here, 32pt cotton is the floor, and it's the spec we recommend for almost everyone.
The honest details: because it's a hand process, expect character — microscopic variation from card to card that you'd never notice in the hand but I'd rather tell you about than have you discover. Edge color is Pantone-matched, so it can hit your exact brand color, not "close enough red." And the paint bonds best to soft uncoated cotton; on hard coated stocks it can sit proud and eventually wear at the corners, which is why we steer edge paint toward cotton every time.
Ways to push it: a neon edge on an otherwise quiet white card is the classic move — restraint on the face, party on the side. Match the edge to a foil accent on the front and the whole object feels engineered. Or skip paint entirely and foil the edges — gold or holographic edge gilding — which is its own product and very much in vogue.
Pair it with blind letterpress on the front and you have a card that never mentions being premium. It just is.
Common questions
- Do painted edges work on thin stock?
- Not well. On thin stock the painted edge is a hairline nobody sees. 32pt is the floor — the edge becomes a real surface that reads across a table. 48pt is a statement.
- Can you match an exact brand color?
- Yes. Edge paint is Pantone-matched, not a fixed palette — we mix to your exact brand color, not "close enough red."
- Why cotton for painted edges?
- The paint bonds best to soft uncoated cotton. On hard coated stocks it can sit proud and wear at the corners over time. Cotton keeps the edge crisp for the life of the card.
