Foil directory
Every stamping foil we run, and the cheaper swap for each one
25 foils from KURZ, Crown Roll Leaf, Great Western and CHENHUI. Each page states where the foil grips, the smallest feature it holds, what it is like to run — and, for every premium foil, the CHENHUI equivalent with an honest account of what you give up.
Foil is metallised film with no fixed RGB value. Every colour here is an on-screen approximation — order samples before you lock a colour.
The house foil card
One card, 40 stamped films — the foils we keep on the shelf and reach for first. Every photograph here is that card, shot under studio light. Foil is metallised film, so no screen can match it; the card is the honest version, and we will send you one.
Front
The everyday metals and pigments: golds, silvers, coppers and the solid colours that carry most of our stamping work.

Back
The special-effect face — holographic, diffraction and pattern films, which only really read in motion.

By finish
We stamp with KURZ, Crown Roll Leaf, Great Western and CHENHUI. Start with the finish — what it should look like in the hand — and we confirm the exact roll on your quote.
By manufacturer
KURZPremium
Leonhard Kurz, Fürth. The reference point for hot stamping foil worldwide — the brand most often written into a spec sheet by name. You pay for release consistency and for the fine-detail performance that holds a 0.15pt hairline over a long run.
Crown Roll LeafPremium
New Jersey converter, the domestic default for a lot of US trade shops. Strong on opaque pigment and diffraction, and easy to source in small quantities without a European lead time. We hold their own stamped colour cards, so the pigment programmes are shown from photographs of real foil rather than from a screen guess.
Great WesternPremium
US foil house with a deep metallic and pigment range. Where we go when a job needs a domestic replacement roll inside a week. We hold their own stamped sample cards for the pigment programme, so those colours are shown from photographs of real foil rather than from a screen guess.
CHENHUIValue line
Our value line and the one we run most. On coated and uncoated paper at accent coverage it stands up to anything on this page for a fraction of the roll cost. It gives ground on difficult substrates, on very fine detail, and on batch-to-batch colour consistency.
Common questions
- What is the cheaper equivalent of a KURZ foil?
- For most paper jobs at accent coverage the value-tier equivalent is genuinely close — our own house matte gold, CHENHUI 171M, sits on more printed work than anything else we run. We compare at the FINISH level rather than code to code, because a catalogue number we cannot verify is worse than no number at all. Each finish page states where the colour matches and where the premium brands earn their money: hairlines under 0.5pt, plastic and film substrates, tight foil-over-print registration, and long runs where a mid-run roll change has to match.
- Do the colours on this page match the real foil?
- No, and they cannot. Foil is metallised film — it reflects its surroundings, so it has no fixed RGB value. Every colour here is an on-screen approximation. Order a sample before you commit a brand colour to metal.
- Which foil should I use for white type on dark paper?
- An opaque pigment foil, never letterpress. Letterpress ink is semi-translucent and will not read as white on a dark sheet. On Colorplan Ebony and similar dark dyed-through stock we stamp opaque white pigment foil.
- Can you foil on plastic or film?
- Yes, but the foil has to be built for it. Most paper-first metallics will not grip a synthetic substrate. Each foil page states substrate by substrate where it grips and where it fails.
- Do you stock all of these?
- Yes. We stamp with KURZ, Crown Roll Leaf, Great Western and CHENHUI. The colour rows published here are the ones we hold verified codes for; the rest are quoted by finish and confirmed by code on your quote. Rolls have minimums, so an unusual colour on a small run may carry a roll cost. We will tell you before it is quoted.
Choosing the paper too? The paper directory covers every stock we print on, and each foil page links to the stocks it sits best on.
