A book is built before it is designed. Case-bound cloth takes a blind deboss beautifully and holds foil on board with a crisp edge; a softcover on uncoated stock wants ink, not heat. Tipped-in plates let a coated image sit inside an uncoated text block without printing the whole book twice. A debossed cover recess can hold a plate, a title, or nothing at all. Tell us the page count, the trim and where the book has to live, and we spec the cloth, the board and the finish around that — then design into it.

Custom books and journals FAQ
Yes — foil on book cloth is one of the most reliable finishes there is, because the cloth surface takes heat and pressure without cracking. Copper, gold and white all read cleanly on dark cloth; on a pale cloth, a blind deboss usually reads better than a light foil. Start a quote with your cover artwork and cloth colour and we'll tell you which of the two will hold your detail.
A tipped-in plate is a separately printed image, usually on a coated or heavier sheet, mounted by hand onto a page or cover recess. You need one when the book's text block is uncoated — photographs on uncoated paper go soft, and a tipped-in plate keeps the image sharp without switching the whole book to a coated stock. Short runs are normal here — a monograph, an archive volume or a studio journal in the low hundreds is a job we take, and cloth binding does not require a huge quantity to be worth it. Below roughly fifty copies the per-unit case-binding cost climbs steeply, and we'll say so rather than quietly quoting it. Start a quote with your quantity, trim size and page count.
