Brushed stainless: the metal finish that hides fingerprints

The linear brush kills reflected glare so your artwork stays legible under any light, and disguises the fingerprints that make mirror steel look smudged the moment it's touched.

Brushed stainless: the metal finish that hides fingerprints

Brushed stainless is our default recommendation for anyone new to metal cards. It's the same laser-cut 316 stainless steel we use for every metal card we make, but with a linear-brushed surface finish instead of a mirror polish — and that brushing does two things: it kills reflected glare so your artwork stays legible under any light, and it disguises the fingerprints that make a mirror-finish steel card look smudged the moment someone touches it. Brushed steel cards look owned rather than showroom.

The specification we run most: brushed stainless base, chemically etched detail (logo, name, one accent element), silk-screened spot color in one to two Pantones. The etch catches shadow; the silk screen catches light. Together they give the card three visual layers — brushed surface, recessed etch, raised ink — without any of them shouting over the others.

Considerations: brushed stainless is directional. The brush lines run one way, and depending on how the card is held, the surface will shift from warm-silver to cool-silver as it catches light. This is a feature — real steel behaves this way — but it means artwork with strong horizontal or vertical elements will interact with the brush direction. We match the brush orientation to your artwork's dominant axis for the most integrated look; if you want a specific brush direction, tell us and we'll spec it. Every stainless steel card is edge-deburred by hand — a raw laser edge is sharp, and we won't send a card that cuts a wallet.

    Common questions

Why brushed instead of mirror stainless?
Mirror throws maximum shine but shows every fingerprint and can reflect harsh light directly at whoever's reading the card. Brushed reads as owned and used rather than showroom. It's the finish that looks best in real-world handling, not just in photos.
Does the brush direction interact with my artwork?
Yes — brushed stainless is directional. The brush lines shift the surface tone as the card catches light. We match brush orientation to your artwork's dominant axis for the most integrated look, or you can specify horizontal vs vertical brush direction.
Are the edges of laser-cut steel sharp?
Straight from the laser, yes. Every stainless card we ship is edge-deburred by hand — a raw laser edge cuts wallets, and we won't send one. Rounded corners are a standard option on request.
