    Spot UV Wedding Invitations

    Spot UV is a clear varnish cured under UV light, and the effect is contrast of sheen rather than colour — glossy artwork against a matte ground, best seen on a dark or soft-touch sheet where the shine has something to play against. It needs a surface that will not drink it: on uncoated cotton the varnish sinks and dulls, and the correct substitute there is raised thermography, which puffs and shines instead.

    What people actually ask

    Can you spot UV on uncoated or cotton paper?
    Not successfully — an uncoated sheet absorbs the varnish and the gloss disappears. On cotton the alternative is raised thermography, which sits proud of the sheet and catches light in a similar way.
    What does spot UV look like on black paper?
    It is at its best there. Clear gloss on a dyed-through black gives a tonal, shifting pattern with no second colour at all — the design only appears when the card catches light.

What you are buying is contrast of sheen — glossy artwork sitting on a matte ground — so the effect lives or dies by the sheet underneath it. On a dark or soft-touch stock, the shine has something to play against and monograms, botanicals and script read like wet glass. On a pale uncoated sheet, you are shining a light on a light.     The effect is sheen against sheen, not ink on paper

    Think of Spot UV as a second surface rather than a second colour. The varnish is applied only where your art sits, then cured, leaving a glassy patch with a hard edge against the untouched paper around it.

    Because the shine is the whole message, the piece behaves differently in the hand than it does on screen. Tilt it and the monogram appears. Hold it flat under a lamp and it can vanish. That movement is the point — guests turn the card without being asked. It also means flat photography rarely does the invitation justice, and neither does a screen proof.

    Dark and soft-touch sheets are where the gloss earns its keep

    We steer Spot UV toward a dark ground almost every time. Deep navy, charcoal, oxblood, black — the varnish reads as a bright wet line against a flat field, and the difference in sheen is unmistakable at arm's length.

    Soft-touch works for the same reason from the opposite direction. That velvety, light-swallowing surface makes anything glossy look almost liquid by comparison, and the tactile jump from suede to glass is as strong as the visual one.

    On a pale, low-contrast sheet the varnish is still there. It just has nothing to argue with.

    On uncoated cotton, ask for raised thermography instead

    Here is the landmine. Cotton is thirsty and open-fibred. Spot UV applied to an uncoated cotton sheet sinks into the surface rather than sitting on top of it, and what should be a glossy monogram comes back dull and patchy. Nobody is happy, and the fault is in the pairing, not the press.

    If your heart is set on a cotton sheet, the correct substitute is raised thermography. Resin powder is dusted over wet ink and heated so the artwork puffs up and shines — dimensional and glossy, but built to live on an absorbent surface. Different physics, same instinct.

    Common questions

    Physically yes, but understand what you get. On a pale sheet the varnish reads as a faint gleam that only appears at certain angles, which some couples want as a quiet, subtle detail. If you expect the monogram to be obvious across a table, put it on a dark or soft-touch ground instead.
