Designing for Plastic Business Cards

Why choose plastic?

Plastic business cards make an immediate impression through material alone. They feel different — smoother, heavier, and more rigid than any paper card. They're also functionally superior in certain situations: waterproof, tear-resistant, and they maintain their appearance through rough handling that would destroy a paper card.

Industries where plastic cards shine include fitness (gym trainers), outdoor services (landscaping, roofing), food and beverage (chefs, bartenders), and any profession where cards might encounter moisture, grease, or heavy wear.

Types of plastic cards

Clear / frosted PVC

Transparent or semi-transparent cards that let you see through them. Frosted PVC has a soft, translucent finish — elegant and understated. Clear PVC is fully transparent, making your printed elements appear to float. Both create a striking visual effect that paper simply cannot achieve.

White PVC

Opaque white plastic that functions like paper for printing purposes but with the durability and feel of plastic. This is the best choice if you want the durability of plastic without the transparent/frosted aesthetic.

Black PVC

Opaque black plastic, often paired with foil stamping or white ink printing for a dramatic, high-contrast look. Black plastic with gold or silver foil is a popular combination for luxury brands.

Design considerations

Designing for plastic is different from designing for paper in several important ways:

• Transparency — On clear/frosted cards, both sides are visible simultaneously. Design elements on the front and back must work together, not conflict.
• Ink opacity — White ink is often needed as a base layer on transparent stock. Without it, colors appear muted or washed out.
• No edge painting — Plastic cards cannot be edge-painted or letterpress-printed. The material doesn't accept these techniques.
• Rounded corners recommended — Plastic cards with sharp corners can feel uncomfortable in hand. We round all plastic cards by default.

Finishing options on plastic

Foil stamping works beautifully on plastic — particularly metallic foils on black or frosted backgrounds. Spot UV is possible but less impactful since plastic is already glossy. Digital printing in full CMYK is standard on all plastic cards.

Plastic vs metal

Both plastic and metal business cards offer extreme durability, but they serve different aesthetics. Plastic is modern, sleek, and versatile with color options. Metal is bold, industrial, and weighty. If you want durability with design flexibility, choose plastic. If you want maximum impact and don't mind a heavier card, consider metal.
