If you're researching metal business cards, you've probably seen the flashy product shots and the vague marketing copy — "make a lasting impression," "stand out from the crowd." This guide skips all of that and tells you what metal cards actually are, how they're made, what your design options are, what constraints to plan for, and who they genuinely make sense for.
We produce metal business cards in eight stainless steel colors with three surface finishes and three design techniques. We've been doing it long enough to know what works, what doesn't, and when you're better off with premium paper instead. This is the honest version.
What metal business cards are made from
Stainless steel
The vast majority of metal business cards — including everything we produce — are manufactured from stainless steel. It's the industry standard because it hits the right balance of weight, durability, corrosion resistance, and ability to accept surface treatments. The same family of alloys used in surgical instruments, high-end watch cases, and architectural hardware.
Your card starts as a flat sheet of stainless steel, laser-cut to credit card dimensions (3.375" × 2.125" — slightly larger than a standard paper business card at 3.5" × 2"). It comes in two thicknesses:
0.5mm — the standard. Noticeably thinner than a thick paper card but dramatically heavier. A single 0.5mm stainless steel card weighs roughly 25 grams — about five times the weight of a standard 16pt paper card. You feel it the moment someone hands it to you. This is what most people order.
0.8mm — the heavy option. Nearly double the weight of 0.5mm. This thickness has genuine heft — it lands on a table with an audible tap. It's impressive, but it's also heavier to carry in quantity and more expensive. Most people don't need 0.8mm. If you're ordering 100+ cards and plan to carry them, 0.5mm is the practical choice.
Aluminum
We also offer aluminum as a lighter alternative. Aluminum cards weigh roughly 40% less than stainless steel — still heavier than paper, but noticeably lighter in the hand compared to steel. The surface accepts engraving and color printing well.
Two constraints with aluminum: it cannot be mirror-polished to a true mirror finish (the alloy doesn't polish that cleanly), and it's only available in 0.5mm thickness. If you want mirror finish or 0.8mm weight, stainless steel is your only option.
Aluminum makes sense when you want the "this is a metal card" reaction at a lower weight — travel-friendly, easier to carry a stack, still distinctly not paper.
How colors work: PVD coating
A silver stainless steel card is natural uncoated metal — that's the color of the steel itself. Every other color — black, gold, rose gold, copper, brass, iridescent, white — is created through PVD coating.
PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) is a vacuum process where a thin metallic layer is bonded to the steel surface at the molecular level. It's not paint. It's not plating in the traditional electrochemical sense. The coating becomes part of the surface — it won't chip, peel, flake, or rub off from normal handling. PVD is the same coating technology used on premium watch bezels, architectural fixtures, and high-end cutlery.
We offer eight metal colors:
Silver — natural uncoated stainless steel. Cool, industrial, modern. The least expensive option because no coating process is required.
Black — our most popular color. Deep gunmetal-black PVD coating with metallic depth underneath — not flat matte black like paint. When the laser engraves through the black coating, it reveals bright silver steel underneath, creating the highest-contrast design effect of any metal color.
Gold — warm, rich 18K gold-tone PVD coating. Not brass, not yellow, not orange — genuine gold warmth with metallic depth. Under brushed finish, the gold catches light beautifully across the grain.
Rose Gold — soft pink-copper metallic tone. Warmer and pinker than standard gold, cooler and subtler than pure copper. A modern, contemporary tone that's become its own design language.
Copper — reddish-brown warm metallic, earthier than rose gold. Has an almost antique quality — warmth without glitter.
Brass — similar to gold but slightly warmer and more yellow-green. Industrial and vintage rather than luxurious. Think hardware, instruments, and craftsmanship.
Iridescent — the most unusual option. Multi-layer interference PVD coating that shifts color with viewing angle — purple, blue, green, gold depending on how light hits it. Dramatic and polarizing. It's a statement.
White — clean, almost ceramic-looking PVD coating over stainless steel. The most understated of the coated options. Engraved designs reveal steel through the white surface.

Three ways to put your design on metal
Every metal card includes laser engraving — it's the base production method. From there, you can add cutouts and/or color printing. These techniques can be combined.
Laser engraving
A focused laser beam etches lines into the metal surface. On colored metals (anything with PVD coating), the laser cuts through the coating to reveal the lighter steel underneath — creating contrast. On natural silver steel, the engraved marks appear slightly darker than the surrounding surface.
The result is precise, permanent, and tactile. You can feel engraved lines with a fingertip. The detail resolution is high — fine text at 6pt and above engraves cleanly. Below 6pt, thin strokes and fine serifs start to lose definition.
Engraving handles text, logos, line art, geometric patterns, and any design element with clear defined edges. What it cannot do: gradients, halftones, photographs, or any continuous-tone imagery. Engraving is binary — the surface is either engraved or it isn't. For tonal range, you need color printing.
A QR code can be laser-engraved for a flat $30 fee regardless of quantity — it's a clean, permanent way to link your card to a digital destination without printing a URL.
Laser cutouts
Instead of engraving into the surface, the laser cuts through the full thickness of the card, removing material entirely. The result is open space — holes, shapes, negative space you can see through.
Cutouts create a dramatic visual effect. When the card sits on a surface, light passes through the cutouts and creates shadows. The effect is architectural — cutout metal cards feel designed, not just printed.
The structural constraint: every cutout design needs to maintain the card's rigidity. You can't remove 60% of the material and expect the card to hold its shape. Elements need connecting bridges — solid metal between cutout areas. As a rule, no cutout should come closer than 2mm to the card edge, and the total cutout area shouldn't exceed about 30-40% of the card face. We review every cutout design for structural integrity before production and flag anything that needs adjustment.
Cutouts are added as an option on top of engraving. The price increment depends on quantity — roughly $15 extra at small quantities up to $200+ at 1,000 cards.
Color printing on metal
Full-color offset printing directly onto the metal surface. This is the only technique that supports gradients, photographs, multi-color designs, and the full CMYK spectrum on a metal card.
The printed areas sit on top of the metal surface, and the metallic base remains visible through and around the printed areas. This interaction between ink and metal creates a distinctive look — colors have a subtle underlying shimmer that doesn't exist on paper. Depending on the base metal color, the effect changes: color printing on silver steel has a cool, sharp quality; on gold steel, the colors gain warmth.
Color printing comes in two flavors: spot color (1-2 specific PMS colors — precise, consistent, used for logos that need exact color matching) and full color (CMYK process — full photographic range, gradients, any color combination). You can print on the front only or front and back. Each option has a different price point — spot color on one side is the least expensive, full color on both sides is the most.
Color printing is often combined with engraving and cutouts. A common premium combination: color-printed front with full brand imagery, engraved back with contact details, and cutout accents on one or both sides.

Surface finishes: matte, brushed, and mirror
Every metal color is available in three surface finishes. The finish changes how light interacts with the card and how your design reads. It doesn't change the color — a gold brushed card is the same gold as a gold matte card, just with a different surface texture.
Matte
Smooth, non-reflective surface. The PVD color appears most evenly on matte — no directional highlights, no light play. Matte is the most legible finish for text-heavy designs because there's no surface reflection competing with the engraving.
Matte is the understated choice. The card reads as metal by weight and temperature, but the surface doesn't announce itself. Good for professional, conservative applications where the card should feel substantial without being flashy.
Matte is the base price for all metal colors.
Brushed
Fine parallel lines running across the entire surface — the same grain pattern you'd see on a Rolex Oyster bracelet, a Bose speaker cone, or a stainless steel kitchen surface. The grain catches light directionally, creating a subtle bright band that shifts as you tilt the card.
We recommend brushed more often than any other finish. The reasons are practical: brushed reads unmistakably as metal both in person and in photographs (important if your card will be featured on a website or social media). The grain pattern creates visual contrast that makes laser-engraved details more legible — the engraved marks cut across the grain at a different angle, making them stand out. And brushed hides fingerprints better than mirror.
Brushed and mirror cost the same — a modest premium above matte.
Mirror
Polished to a genuine reflective finish — you can see reflections in the surface. Mirror is the most visually dramatic option. Under good lighting, a mirror-finish metal card is an attention magnet.
The trade-offs are real: fingerprints show immediately and obviously. Light scratches are visible. Engraved text can be harder to read because the surrounding surface is reflective too — the contrast between engraved and non-engraved areas is lower than on brushed or matte. Mirror works best when the design is bold, simple, and not dependent on fine text legibility.
Mirror is not available on aluminum cards — the alloy doesn't polish to a true mirror.
Who orders metal business cards
After producing thousands of metal card orders, clear patterns emerge.
Real estate is the single largest category. Agents and brokers hand out cards at showings, open houses, and client meetings — situations where the card IS part of the sales presentation. A metal card signals "I operate at a different level" in an industry where everyone has paper cards.
Luxury services — high-end personal trainers, private chefs, concierge services, wealth advisors. Industries where the service is expensive and the client relationship is personal. The card matches the price point of the service.
Creative professionals — photographers, videographers, creative directors, design studio founders. For people whose livelihood depends on visual impact, the card is a portfolio piece.
Founders and executives who want a conversation starter. A CEO at a networking event hands out a metal card — it gets commented on, and that comment becomes a conversation that might not have happened with a paper card.
Event and promotional use — VIP invitations, membership cards, launch event keepsakes, limited-run promotional pieces. When the card itself is the experience, not just a contact vehicle.
Who metal is NOT for: High-volume networkers who hand out 30+ cards per week (the per-card cost makes this unsustainable). Companies ordering for large teams of 15+ employees (the total cost scales quickly — premium paper with foil or embossing is usually the better move for team orders). Anyone who needs full-bleed photographic imagery as the primary design element (color printing exists, but metal's strength is material impact, not print reproduction).
What to expect from the production process
Metal card production takes approximately 3 weeks from file approval. The process involves multiple discrete steps — laser programming, PVD coating, laser engraving, laser cutting (if cutouts), color printing (if applicable), quality inspection — each requiring dedicated equipment and setup time. This isn't a digital press where your file goes straight to output.
The file review
Metal cards have stricter design requirements than paper. When you submit your artwork, our team reviews it against the production constraints: minimum text size (6pt), minimum line weight (0.3mm), cutout structural integrity, proper layer separation between engraved, cutout, and printed elements. If anything needs adjustment, we flag it before production — we don't print first and apologize later.

The proof
Before production begins, we send you a digital proof showing exactly what will be engraved, cut, and printed, and where on the card. You approve the proof, and only then does the card go into production. If something doesn't look right in the proof, we revise until it does.
Shipping and packaging
Metal cards are heavier than paper — a box of 100 cards weighs over 2.5 kg (about 5.5 lbs). They ship in protective packaging to prevent scratching. Standard US shipping is included in the price. International shipping is available at additional cost.
Adding NFC to metal cards
Any metal card can be produced with an embedded NFC chip — a thin chip (under 0.3mm) sandwiched inside the card during manufacturing. The chip stores a URL. When someone taps the card against any modern smartphone, the URL opens automatically. No app required.
NFC adds approximately $2 to $4 per card depending on quantity. At 100 cards, that's roughly $200 to $400 in additional cost on top of the base metal card price.
The most common NFC destinations: a digital business card page (Blinq, HiHello, Popl), a LinkedIn profile, a company website, or a Calendly booking page. The URL can be updated at any time without replacing the physical card.
Metal + NFC creates a compelling double-take: the recipient registers the weight and material of the card, and then discovers it's interactive. Both the physical impression and the digital functionality reinforce the same message — this person is operating at a different level.
Pricing overview
Metal business cards range from $230 for 5 cards (silver, matte, engraved) to $7,900+ for 1,000 (premium color, brushed, full-color printing). A typical order — 100 cards in silver or black stainless steel with engraving — runs $475 to $750, or $4.75 to $7.50 per card.
Four variables drive the price: metal color (silver is cheapest, black/white/iridescent are most), surface finish (matte is cheapest, brushed and mirror are the same slight premium), design technique (engraving is base, adding cutouts and color printing each increase cost), and quantity (per-card cost decreases significantly at higher volumes).

Metal vs premium paper: an honest comparison
Metal cards are not an upgrade from paper cards. They're a different category with a different purpose.
Premium paper cards — cotton with gold foil, thick stock with letterpress, soft touch with spot UV — operate in a world of craft, print technique, and design refinement. The artistry is in how ink meets paper, how foil catches light, how an embossed logo feels under a thumb. The range of available finishes is wider on paper than on metal. Paper is lighter, more portable, and costs 3 to 7 times less per card at equivalent quantity.
Metal cards operate in a world of material surprise. The value is in the physical properties of the object — weight, temperature, rigidity, sound. A metal card creates a reaction that paper simply cannot, regardless of how premium the paper is.

Common questions
How long do metal business cards last?
Indefinitely. Stainless steel doesn't degrade under normal conditions, and PVD coatings are designed to resist wear, corrosion, and UV exposure. A metal card will look the same in ten years as it does today. If anything changes, it's minor surface scratches on mirror-finish cards from being carried loose with other items.
Can I use my existing business card design on metal?
In most cases, yes — with modifications. Solid-color backgrounds become the metal surface itself (choose the metal color that matches). Foil elements translate to engravings. Full-color graphics move to the color print layer. Fine text below 6pt needs enlargement. Gradients require color printing, not engraving. Do metal cards set off metal detectors?
They can. A single card in a wallet is unlikely to trigger a walk-through detector, but a stack of cards in a bag may flag during X-ray screening at airports. If you fly frequently, carry a small number in your wallet and ship the rest to your destination.
Are they waterproof?
Yes. Stainless steel and PVD coatings are fully water-resistant. A metal card can survive a washing machine cycle, rain, spilled drinks, and humid environments without any damage.
What size are metal business cards?
Credit card size — 3.375" × 2.125" (85.6mm × 54mm). This is slightly larger than a standard paper business card (3.5" × 2") and matches the ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 standard used by credit cards, driver's licenses, and ID badges. Metal cards fit in standard wallets and card holders.
Can I order just a few cards to try?
Yes. We offer quantities as low as 5 cards. The per-card price at 5 is high ($46-$49 per card) because you're absorbing the full setup cost, but it's a valid way to test the product or create a small batch for a specific event. Most people start at 50 or 100.
