How holographic foil works

Holographic foil uses a microscopically textured surface that diffracts light into its component colors — creating the characteristic rainbow-shifting, prismatic effect. The process is the same as standard foil stamping (heat, pressure, metallic die or digital application), but the foil itself contains a holographic pattern embossed into its metallic layer.

When light hits the surface, each tiny facet reflects a different wavelength. As the card moves in your hand, the colors shift and flow — creating an effect that's impossible to photograph accurately and impossible to replicate with ink or digital printing.

Full coverage vs accent holographic

There are two main approaches to using holographic foil on business cards:

• Full-coverage holographic — The entire card surface (or one full side) is covered in holographic foil, with your design printed or knocked out of the foil. This creates maximum visual impact.
• Accent holographic — Holographic foil is applied only to specific design elements (logo, text, borders, patterns) while the rest of the card uses standard printing. This creates contrast between the shifting holographic areas and the static printed areas.

Design tips for holographic cards

Holographic foil is inherently eye-catching, so your design should work with it rather than compete against it. Bold, simple shapes read better than fine detail — the prismatic effect can obscure very thin lines or small text.

Dark backgrounds (black, navy, deep green) create the most dramatic contrast with holographic foil. The holographic areas appear to glow against the dark surface. Light backgrounds work too, but the effect is more subtle.
