What makes foil business cards more (or less) expensive

Quantity — the biggest factor

Foil stamping requires a metal die that costs the same whether you're printing 250 cards or 5,000. At 250 cards, that die cost is a significant portion of the per-card price. At 1,000+, it's spread thin and barely moves the needle. This is why per-card pricing drops dramatically as quantity increases.

The jump from 250 to 500 cards often saves 30–40% per card. Going from 500 to 1,000 saves another 20–30%. Beyond 1,000, savings continue but flatten out — you're mostly paying for material at that point.

Paper stock

Paper choice affects both the base card cost and the foil result. Cotton (32pt) is a premium uncoated stock — the most expensive paper option but produces the most characterful foil result. Silk laminate (16pt or 32pt) is moderate in cost and gives crisp, modern foil edges. Soft touch is similar in price to silk but adds a velvety tactile dimension. Black stock is moderately priced because no ink printing is required — the card color is the paper itself.

As a rough guide: the same foil design on silk 16pt might cost 15–20% less than on cotton 32pt at the same quantity — because the paper is thinner, lighter, and less expensive per sheet.

Foil on one side vs both sides

Adding foil to the back means a second press pass — the paper goes through the foil stamping press twice. Expect roughly 25–30% more for front-and-back foil compared to front-only.

If budget is a concern but you want foil on both sides, consider foil on the front (where it has the most visual impact) and a simple printed back (ink only) — this avoids the second foil pass entirely.

Number of foil colors

Each foil color requires its own die and its own press pass. A card with gold text + silver border = two dies, two passes. The cost increase per additional foil color is roughly equivalent to adding a second side — 25–35% more per additional color.

Most customers stick to one foil color. If your design uses two metallic elements, ask yourself whether both need to be different metals — sometimes gold for everything is more cohesive (and cheaper) than gold + silver.

Foil type: hot stamping vs digital

Hot foil stamping (die-based, true metallic) costs more than digital foil (toner-based metallic effect) because of the die and press setup. Digital foil is available on quick-ship products at lower price points. Hot foil is the studio-tier process for maximum quality.

If you're ordering 500+ cards on standard stock and metallic brilliance isn't the star of the design, quick-ship digital foil may be all you need. If the foil IS the focal point — a bold logo on black stock, metallic type on cotton — hot foil is worth the difference.

Combination with other finishes

Each additional finish (embossing, edge painting, spot UV, letterpress) is a separate production step with its own tooling and press pass. Combinations escalate cost but produce cards that are genuinely multi-dimensional.

Typical add-on costs on top of a base foil card: embossing adds roughly $85, edge painting adds roughly $50, spot UV adds roughly $90, rounded corners add roughly $15.

These are flat add-on prices — they don't change much with quantity, which means they're proportionally more significant at lower quantities and barely noticeable at higher quantities.
