    Edge Painting vs Edge Foil

Color on the card's edge — painting vs foil options, stock requirements, and color choices.

    What is edge finishing?

Edge finishing adds color to the narrow sides of a business card — the thin strip of paper you see when looking at a card from the side. On a standard 16pt card, this edge is barely visible. On a 32pt or 48pt card, it becomes a real design surface — a flash of color that's visible in a stack and eye-catching when the card is handed over.

There are two main methods: painting (applying liquid paint or ink) and foil (applying metallic foil to the edge). Both produce beautiful results but have different characteristics.

    Edge painting

Edge painting applies opaque color paint to all four edges of the card. The paint is applied after the cards are printed, cut, and stacked — the entire block of cards is painted at once, ensuring consistent coverage.

Available colors typically include metallics (gold, silver, copper, rose gold), bright saturates (red, blue, green, yellow, pink), and neutral tones (black, white). Custom PMS color matching is available for Studio and Custom orders.

    Edge foil

Edge foil applies metallic foil to the card edges instead of paint. The result is more reflective and mirror-like than painted edges — closer to jewelry than stationery. Edge foil is typically available in gold, silver, rose gold, and copper.

Edge foil requires thicker stock (32pt minimum) because the foil application process involves heat and pressure that thinner stocks can't withstand.

    Thickness requirements

Edge finishing works best on thick stock — 24pt minimum, with 32pt and 48pt producing the most dramatic results. The thicker the card, the more edge surface is visible, and the more impact the colored edge makes.

    Pairing with other techniques

Edge painting pairs naturally with letterpress and embossing — all three techniques benefit from thick stock, so you're already working with the right material. A letterpress card on 48pt cotton with gold edge painting is one of the most popular luxury combinations we produce.
