What does 'pt' mean?

When we talk about business card thickness, we measure in 'points' — abbreviated as 'pt.' One point equals 1/1000 of an inch. So a 16pt card is 0.016 inches thick, while a 32pt card is 0.032 inches — exactly twice as thick. This is different from font points or paper weight (GSM), which measure different things entirely.

Most business cards you've encountered in everyday life are between 14pt and 16pt. These feel familiar, professional, and lightweight. But the range extends much further — from economy 12pt cards all the way up to our 48pt ultra-thick stock, which feels closer to a piece of board than a piece of paper.

Which thickness is right for you?

For most professionals, 16pt is the sweet spot — thick enough to feel premium, thin enough to stack neatly in a cardholder. If your brand leans toward luxury, architecture, or high-end creative services, consider 32pt or thicker. The added weight signals quality before anyone reads a word.

Keep in mind that thicker stock works beautifully with tactile finishes. Our letterpress business cards use 32pt and 48pt cotton stock because the paper needs enough depth to hold the impression. Thinner stock simply can't achieve the same debossed effect.

How thickness affects finishing options

Not every finish works on every thickness. Foil stamping and spot UV perform well across the full range, but letterpress and deep embossing require at least 24pt — ideally 32pt or more. Edge painting also benefits from thicker stock, as there's more surface area on the card's edge to paint.
