    Painted Edge Business Cards

When a card is thick enough, the edges become a surface. Edge painting adds a stripe of opaque color visible in every stack and card holder. Edge foil adds metallic shimmer. Either way, you're finishing a detail most people overlook — and that's exactly what makes it memorable.

    Edge painting vs edge foil

    Edge painting

Edge painting applies opaque color to the sides of the card. The paint is saturated and matte — it creates a clean, solid stripe of color visible whenever the card is held from the side, stacked, or placed in a card holder. Common edge colors include black, red, blue, gold, and pink.

Edge painting works best on thick, uncoated stock where the paint adheres cleanly to the raw paper edge. The thicker the card, the more visible the painted edge becomes. At 32pt, the stripe is subtle but noticeable. At 48pt, it's a bold design element.

    Edge foil

Edge foil applies metallic foil to the sides of the card. Instead of matte color, the edge catches light and reflects — creating a shimmer that changes as the card moves. Gold, silver, rose gold, and copper are the most popular edge foil colors.

Edge foil is available on our Custom Edge Finishing product and pairs beautifully with foil accents on the face of the card. A gold foil logo on the front with gold foil edges creates a cohesive, premium look that feels intentional from every angle.

    Built-in edge detail

Triplex cards achieve an edge detail without any additional treatment. Three layers of paper are bonded together — white on both sides with a colored center layer. The colored core is visible on all four edges as a contrasting stripe sandwiched between the outer layers. This detail is structural and permanent — it can't wear off because it's part of the paper itself.
