Setting up your file
Paper and production
- Hot foil stamping with a custom metal die: one foil colour per die.
- Cotton, 32pt: Soft and toothy; the foil sits into it. Our pick for a first foil card.
- Silk, 32pt: Smooth with a satin sheen. The brightest foil and the sharpest fine lines.
- Black: Dyed through, so the edge is black too. Gold, silver and copper read best.
- Coloured, 32pt: Six mill-dyed colours. Foil only: ink doesn't show on coloured stock.
- Lead time: About 3 weeks after proof approval (estimate).
- Need another paper or thickness? Ask for a custom quote.
File setup
- Upload print-ready files after checkout: PDF, AI, PSD or EPS, CMYK, 300 dpi, with bleed.
- Keep every foil line at 0.6 mm or thicker. Finer lines fill in or break.
- QR codes print in ink, never foil, so a card with a QR needs cotton or silk.
- You get a free design proof, checked by a person, before anything is stamped.
What usually goes wrong
Hairlines vanish.
Our fix: We check every stroke on your proof and thicken anything under 0.6 mm before a die is cut.
Black on black is a whisper.
Our fix: Dark foil on dark paper reads as a sheen, not contrast. We say so on the proof and show gold, silver or copper beside it.
Ink disappears on dark paper.
Our fix: Design black and coloured cards as foil only. For a full-colour logo, choose cotton or silk.

Hot foil questions
Which paper should I choose for hot foil?
Cotton if you want texture and a soft, pressed-in feel. Silk for the brightest foil and the finest lines. Black or coloured if the card itself should carry the colour, edge included.
How much do custom hot foil business cards cost?
On 32pt cotton with foil on the front: $310 for 250, $410 for 500 and $620 for 1,000. Foil on both sides, embossing and edge foil add to that, and the configurator shows the exact total before you pay.
How long do custom foil business cards take?
About 3 weeks after proof approval (estimate). The die, the stamping and the finishing set the pace. Your design proof is free and checked by a person.
Can I print full colour as well as foil?
Yes, on cotton and silk. On black and coloured papers ink doesn't show, so those cards are designed as foil only.
Can I add embossing?
Yes, on cotton, black and coloured stock, with its own die. Not on silk: embossing needs an uncoated sheet to hold its shape. On black and dark stock, emboss the foiled mark: a blind deboss there nearly disappears.
Can I have edge foil and rounded corners together?
Yes. Edge foil works with square or rounded corners.
How fine can the foil lines be?
Keep every foil line at 0.6 mm or thicker. Finer lines fill in or break. We check every stroke on your proof and flag anything thinner before the die is made.
Can I see the foil before I order?
Yes. Order the sample pack to hold real foil cards in your hand, or open the Studio to see your logo in foil on screen. Every order also gets a free design proof before anything is stamped.
Which foil colours can I choose?
Six are in the configurator: gold, silver, rose gold, copper, black and holographic.
