Business Card Shapes and Sizes
Square, circle, rounded corners, and custom die-cut — when non-standard shapes work and when to stay standard.
Why go non-standard?
A standard 3.5 × 2 inch card fits wallets, cardholders, and expectations. A non-standard shape breaks all three — which is exactly the point. Shape is the first thing people notice about a card, before they read a single word. A circle, a square, or a custom silhouette signals that this person (or brand) does things differently.
Non-standard shapes work best for creative professionals, lifestyle brands, and anyone whose business benefits from visual memorability over conventional professionalism. If your card needs to fit neatly into a Rolodex, stay standard. If it needs to make someone's eyes widen — consider shape.
Square cards
Our most popular non-standard shape. Square business cards measure 2.5 × 2.5 inches — compact, symmetrical, and satisfying to hold. The square format works beautifully for centered logos, monograms, and Instagram-native brands. Design tip: square cards benefit from generous white space. Don't try to pack as much information as a standard card — embrace the format's visual simplicity.
Circle and oval cards
Circle and oval business cards are the most distinctive non-standard shape — nothing else on the table looks like them. Circles work best for brands with circular logos, food and beverage businesses (think: coaster-shaped), and anyone who wants maximum visual impact.
Design constraint: text placement on a circle requires careful planning. Horizontal text works near the center but gets cut off near the edges. Curved text following the card's perimeter is an option but harder to read. Keep it simple.
Rounded corner cards
Rounded corner cards are the subtlest non-standard option — standard dimensions with softened corners. The effect is modern and friendly without being dramatic. Rounded corners also prevent dog-earing (bent corners), keeping the card looking fresh longer.
We offer multiple corner radii — from a gentle 1/8" round to a pronounced 1/2" round. Choose based on how much softness you want to convey.
Custom die-cut shapes
Beyond standard shapes, we can produce virtually any custom silhouette through die-cutting. The die-cut process uses a custom-made metal cutting tool to stamp cards into your desired shape. Examples: house silhouettes for real estate agents, guitar picks for musicians, leaf shapes for garden businesses.
Custom die-cuts require a die setup (included in Studio pricing) and are best for shapes that are simple enough to be recognizable at small scale. Very complex outlines with thin peninsulas may be fragile. Browse our die-cut collection for popular shapes and custom options.
